What is this book about?
This book covers the a brief introduction into networking, reasoning behind why you would want to perform packet analysis, and several instances of performed packet analysis with detailed explanations for various uses.
Who should read this book?
Anyone looking into packet analysis. This is for network technicians who have limited or no experience with packet analysis. A solid understanding of networking is not required, but you would get a lot more out of the book if you have it. Technicians and managers alike will get something out of this book, although it will be more of a skim for the managers.
What did I like about this book?
The author did an excellent job giving background information before diving into the subject manner. It was detailed enough to provide requisite knowledge, but not too vast or in depth to bore those who already understand. The level of depth was perfect for what I needed to get out of the book. I’ve used Wireshark before, but not well nor particularly efficiently. The book has given me practical uses for packet analysis in my job to include efficiency, security, and troubleshooting. It is a challenge to walk away from this book without being excited about packet analysis and learning more.
What didn’t I like about this book?
The examples provided were good and well chosen, but seemed to move a bit quickly at times. This is always a point of contention among technicians as some like to be given exhaustive details, where others feel explaining things too fully is insulting/boring. I would liked to have seen the details explained out a bit more, but the brevity really did keep you intrigued.
Should you buy this book?
Absolutely! Unlike most of the books that I have reviewed on this site, this does not require a professional level certification to get the most out of it. It was an enjoyable read, I learned a lot and am certain I can apply what I have learned.
